U.S. Painkiller Abuse ‘Epidemic’ May Be Declining, Study Says

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 14, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. "epidemic" of prescription-painkiller abuse may be starting to reverse course, a new study suggests.

Experts said the findings, published Jan. 15 in the New England Journal of Medicine, are welcome news. The decline suggests that recent laws and prescribing guidelines aimed at preventing painkiller abuse are working to some degree.

NABP e-News: Medication Disposal Site Search Tool Now Available on AWARxE Website

To help visitors to WWW.AWARERX.ORG more easily find disposal locations in their area, the AWARXE® Prescription Drug Safety Program has launched a location-based search tool. Visitors who type an address, city, state, or zip code into the website’s new search tool will receive a list and map of the closest medication disposal sites. Law enforcement organizations, civic centers, and pharmacies are the most common sites where prescription drugs can be disposed of in a manner that is safe for family, friends, and the environment.

PQA Endorses New Performance Measure and Receives NQF Endorsement on Two Additional Measures

Springfield, VA (November 21, 2014) - The membership of the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) has endorsed a new performance measure: Statin Use in Persons with Diabetes. This measure evaluates the percentage of patients ages 40 - 75 years who were dispensed a medication for diabetes and who also receive a statin medication. It is based on the 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) Guideline on the Treatment of Blood Cholesterol to Reduce Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular (ASCV) Risk in Adults. PQA member organizations had the opportunity to submit written comments regarding the newly developed and tested performance measure, participate in a phone conference hosted by PQA staff to discuss the measure and address questions, and, finally, to vote electronically on its endorsement. PQA was pleased that 90% of member respondents voted to endorse the Statin Use in Persons with Diabetes measure.
