ATLANTA — The flu is continuing to impact the United States, especially across the Southeast U.S. for the week ended Jan. 21 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Friday.

The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness was 3.4%, well above the national baseline of 2.2% and an increase from the week prior ILI report of 3.2%.

CDC Urges Flu Vaccinations for All Americans Over the Age of Six Months

Because less than half of Americans received flu vaccinations last year, according to a new CDC report, the agency is once again reminding the public that patients and caregivers of patients six months and older should be vaccinated. According to CDC’s September 19, 2014 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, only one-third of adults aged 18 to 64 received flu shots last year, Pharmacy Times reports. Influenza vaccinations are particularly important for persons who are at increased risk for severe complications from influenza, or at higher risk for influenza-related outpatient, emergency department, or hospital visits, according to information posted the CDC website.

FDA Warns Consumers About Fraudulent Ebola Treatment Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to be aware of products sold online claiming to prevent or treat the Ebola virus. Since the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa, the FDA has seen and received consumer complaints about a variety of products claiming to either prevent the Ebola virus or treat the infection.

There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or drugs to prevent or treat Ebola. Although there are experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments under development, these investigational products are in the early stages of product development, have not yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness, and the supply is very limited. There are no approved vaccines, drugs, or investigational products specifically for Ebola available for purchase on the Internet. By law, dietary supplements cannot claim to prevent or cure disease.
